Statement on EPA’s Rule to Report Greenhouse Gas Emissions

“Today’s release of the greenhouse gas reporting rule is a critical step in demonstrating our nation’s leadership and commitment to addressing climate change. Our nation is about to go on a carbon diet; and when you start any diet, you begin by jumping on the scale. The greenhouse gas registry will serve as our ‘carbon scale.’ If we’re truly going to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, we must jump on this ‘carbon scale’ and determine exactly how much we’re emitting. The registry will allow us to gather complete, accurate, consistent, and reliable data on our greenhouse gas emissions. Without this information, the success of our climate policy is in jeopardy.”

Note: Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) is the lead sponsor of the Greenhouse Gas Registry Act ( H.R. 232) provisions of which are included in the American Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R. 2454). Her work on this issue helped insure that certain critical details are included as part of the EPA Greenhouse Gas Registry.
